David Grethlein

Who am I?

Hi! I'm David Grethlein and I currently study as a PhD candidate (and work as a research assistant) for the Games, Artificial Intelligence, and Media Systems (GAIMS) Center at Drexel University. Concurrently, I work as a Data Scientist at Diagnostic Driving, Inc. in West Philadelphia. My job largely revolves around analyzing and visualizing driving simulator time series data with the goal of improving driver on-road safety using Simulator pre-screening.

Education

I graduated (cum laude) with a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics and 2 minors in Mandarin Chinese and Computer Science from Drexel University in 2017. At the same, I graduated with honors from the Pennoni Honors College, also at Drexel University.

Since graduation, I have been enrolled as a PhD Student in the College of Computing and Informatics at Drexel University where Santiago Ontañón PhD has been my research advisor. In the time as a graduate student there we have co-authored several works with some published and others still currently in submission (Google Scholar Profile).

I completed my candidacy exam (manuscript | slides) in March of 2021 and I am currently working on my Thesis proposal, targeting a defense in the May/June of 2023.

Research

I am currently researching time series supervised and unsupervised learning methods. My work largely focuses on developing methods for automatically detecting and characterizing prototypical behaviors in time series data (Github Profile).

Interests

When I'm not coding or reading for school or work, I regularly box and occasionally practice Muay Thai kick-boxing. I love to cook for my friends and family, and have been teaching myself to play the piano (again). I enjoy studying languages in general, particularly relishing opportunities to practice and improve my Mandarin Chinese. I am dreadfully obsessed with my cat Ginny Bean.

I also enjoy reading, solving crossword puzzles, Sudokus, and Rubik's cubes. When bandwidth allows, I hope to compete developing a Rubik's cube solver application that I began as an undergrad.
